The river

The Pere Marquette is one of the best wild steelhead rivers in the Great Lakes basin and, unusually for the region, it has no main-stem dam until well downstream. The fish come up on autumn and spring rain events, which means the river rewards flexibility: a day of rain can turn a mediocre week into the best fishing of the season, and the anglers who catch most are the ones who can drop everything and go.

On this river

Fishing the rise

Do not wait for the river to clear. Steelhead move on the rise, and the first six hours of colour are the most fishable. Use a float with a large egg pattern, fish the inside of bends where the current is broken, and expect the fish to be within three metres of the bank.

Spawning fish and ethics

From late October you will see fish on gravel. Leave them alone. Fish the water below the redds for drop-backs and the water above for travelling fish, and never wade across a redd — a single boot print can destroy a season's recruitment in a river this size.

Summer dry-fly on a steelhead river

In July the same water fishes as a small brown trout stream: Tricos at dawn, terrestrials in the afternoon. Use a 3-weight, a 4.5-metre leader and a #22 spinner, and treat the deeper bends as the places where the bigger resident fish live. This is the season to learn the river's structure without the pressure of a run.

Licence and rules

Michigan fishing licence required from 17; a nonresident annual or 24-hour permit both exist. The Pere Marquette has special regulations on the flies-only reach above Baldwin, including a ban on weight below a certain distance from the fly. Steelhead retention requires a separate harvest tag on some years, and the daily limit for steelhead is one fish on most of the river.

What licence do I need?

How does the water behave?

This river rises fast and drops fast because much of its catchment is sand and pine forest. A 25 mm rain in October can move it from 300 to 1,000 cfs overnight and bring a fresh push of steelhead with it; the water then clears in about 48 hours. Fishing it on the drop, as the colour goes from tea to green, is the single most productive window of the year.
