Licence and rules

Licence and rules. North Carolina requires a fishing licence from 16, with a separate trout privilege that must be purchased in addition. The 4 km below the hatchery bridge is catch-and-release, single-hook artificial lures only. Because the fish are hatchery-raised and heavily pressured, barbless hooks matter here more than almost anywhere else in the Southeast.

Season

Fishable all year; the hatchery-supported reach holds fish through winter

Flow

60–250 cfs; spates after summer thunderstorms are frequent and short

The Davidson is a forest stream and its flow is driven by summer thunderstorms; a 40 mm storm can take it from 80 to 400 cfs in two hours and it drops almost as fast. The catch-and-release reach holds its temperature well because of the rhododendron shade, which is why it fishes in July when the lower river is too warm. After a spate the fish are usually back on the feed within 24 hours.
