Penns Creek · access

Licence and rules

Licence and rules. Pennsylvania licence plus trout permit required from 16. The stretch above Weikert is catch-and-release, artificial-lures-only, and it is patched with private land — the landowners here have been generous with access and the least you can do is close gates. During the Green Drake week expect every pull-off on the road to be full by mid-afternoon.

Season

Green Drake in the last week of May defines the year; autumn olives run to November

Flow

200–700 cfs; the spring snowmelt bump in March is the biggest of the year

Penns is a freestone stream, so the green drake hatch can be destroyed by a single muddy thunderstorm: the fish cannot see the fly and the hatch is over for the year. Locals watch the radar obsessively in the last week of May. Fishable clarity is roughly 60 cm of visibility; below that, switch to a streamer or go home.
