Licence and rules
Licence and rules. Slovenia requires a fishing licence purchased from the local fishing association or a licensed operator, and the Soča is divided into districts each with its own permit and its own rules. Catch-and-release is compulsory for marble trout everywhere, and the use of barbed hooks is banned in most districts. A daily permit for the upper Soča is limited in number, so book ahead in July and August.
Season
Marble trout from 1 April; grayling from 16 May; the season closes at the end of September
Flow
500–2,500 cfs; the upper valley is very clear and very cold
The Soča is a karst alpine river: after rain in the Julian Alps it can rise a metre in a few hours and turn from turquoise to milky grey-green, which is why locals fish the morning and watch the afternoon sky. Peak clarity is usually in the morning before the day's snowmelt arrives from the high tributaries. Water temperature in the upper valley rarely exceeds 14°C, even in August.
