Licence and rules

Licence and rules. Colorado requires a fishing licence for anyone 16 and older, sold by the day, 5 days or the season. Cheesman Canyon is artificial-flies-only, catch-and-release; the Deckers reach has its own set of special regulations posted at each access. A state parks pass is separate from the fishing licence and is needed if you park inside a state park boundary.

Season

A year-round urban-adjacent fishery; the canyon is best in winter when crowds thin out

Flow

120–350 cfs in the Cheesman Canyon stretch; Deckers runs higher and muddier after rain

Cheesman releases are small and cold — often under 200 cfs — which is why the canyon fishes in January. Deckers is affected by the tributaries between the dam and the bridge, so it muddies after summer thunderstorms while the canyon stays clear. When the Deckers gauge goes over about 600 cfs, the braided flats become dangerous and most people move upstream.
