Gaula River · fly box
Norway's most consistent big-salmon river, and the one with the fairest access rules.
| Pattern | Imitates | Size | Technique |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaula Flomflue | Salmon attractor | #2-4 | The high-water fly: big, bright, and fished close to the bank on a sink tip. |
| Silver Doctor | Salmon attractor | #4-6 | Classic swing on a floating line with a fast sink tip in June's high water. |
| Black Dose | Salmon attractor | #8-10 | Small and dark for clear, low August water; swing it slowly. |
| Norwegian Nymph | Stonefly nymph | #10-12 | Brown trout in the tributaries; tight-line upstream. |

Night fishing under the midnight sun
At 63 degrees north the July nights never go fully dark, and the Gaula's salmon take best between 22:00 and 02:00. Fish a small dark tube fly on a floating line, work the tail of the pool first, and keep your casts short — in the half-light a fish that has felt the line is finished for the night.
Reading high water for big fish
In June, the Gaula's big salmon run close to the bank because the midstream current is too strong to hold in. Fish the inside of the bend and any gravel shelf that is no more than 1.5 metres deep, and use a fly that is big enough to be seen in peaty water — a #2 or #4 rather than a #8.
The honest catch report
Norwegian salmon management depends on anglers reporting every fish, including released ones. The Gaula's vald require a return at the end of the day and the statistics are public. Failing to report is not a victimless shortcut — it is what causes rivers to be closed early for everyone.
